What to Ask a PVA Film Supplier Before You Order

Created on Today
Two quotations for PVA water-soluble film may look similar while covering different products or delivery terms. Before comparing the price per kilogram, check whether both suppliers are quoting what your production line actually needs.
These five questions can help you prepare a clearer enquiry and avoid missing details.

1. What film and roll specifications are you quoting?

Ask for the film grade, thickness and tolerance, width, roll length and core dimensions. If your machine has a maximum roll diameter or weight, include those limits too.
A quotation that says only “PVA film, 76 μm” leaves several questions unanswered. Confirm the complete roll specification, rather than assuming rolls of the same thickness will fit the same machine.
If you are unsure, share your current roll label, machine requirements or a reference photo. Clearly separate confirmed dimensions from details that still need checking.

2. What does the test report actually cover?

Ask which film grade and production batch the report represents, and which test methods and conditions were used.
For dissolution results, check the sample thickness, water temperature, agitation method and how complete dissolution was determined. The room temperature listed on a report does not necessarily tell you the test water temperature.
Also distinguish between a tested batch result and an agreed supply specification. A result from one sample should not automatically be treated as a guarantee for every delivery.

3. How will compatibility with my formulation be checked?

A film’s ability to dissolve in water does not, by itself, establish compatibility with your filling product.
Explain the intended application and provide the relevant formulation information for technical review. Ask what sample trial is needed before placing a production order.
Agree on what to check during the trial, such as forming, sealing, leakage, storage behaviour and dissolution under the intended use conditions. Confirm the test duration and acceptance criteria with the supplier instead of relying only on how a freshly made pod looks.

4. What are the sample, minimum order and lead-time arrangements?

Ask for separate confirmation of:
  • The sample roll specification and quantity
  • Sample charges and courier arrangements
  • The minimum order for your required specification
  • Production lead time and when it starts
  • Whether transport time is included or additional
Do not assume a sample roll and a production order have the same availability. Before arranging a trial, confirm that the sample is suitable for the machine and checks you plan to run.

5. What does the quoted price include?

Ask suppliers to quote against the same film specification, quantity and delivery basis.
Check the currency, pricing unit, named delivery location, agreed trade term, payment terms and quotation validity. Clarify which costs are included, such as packaging, freight and insurance, and which charges remain for the buyer.
When two prices differ, identify those differences before deciding which offer is better for your project.

Prepare these details before your enquiry

You do not need every answer before contacting a supplier. Start with what you know:
  • Intended application and filling product
  • Required film thickness and width
  • Roll length, core dimensions and machine limits
  • Current film specification, if available
  • Trial quantity and expected order quantity
  • Delivery destination and required timing
ZESONPACK supplies PVA water-soluble film with thickness options from 50–90 μm and widths made to order within 60–1200 mm. The proposed specification should be checked against your machine, pod design and trial requirements.
Planning a film trial or comparing quotations? Share your requirements with ZESONPACK so we can discuss the specification and identify what needs technical confirmation before ordering.
